Event detail for site: Llanllugan

c. 1190: Foundation

The exact date of the foundation of the house by Maredudd ap Rhobert (d. 1244), lord of Cedewain, is not certain but it was likely established between 1170 and 1190.

Morgan ('An Early Charter of Llanllugan Nunnery') argues that the foundation may have been later and that Maredudd ap Rhobert's charter was perhaps issued c. 1216-17. However, as Cartwright (Feminine Sanctity and Spirituality in Medieval Wales) suggests, this may have been a confirmation of Llanllugan's lands rather than a foundation charter.

Llanllugan was under the auspices of Strata Marcella which lay some twenty kilometres away.
