Display person:

Henry III , king of England and lord of Ireland, and duke of Aquitaine
(Henry of Winchester)

Born: 1 October 1207   Died: 16 November 1272   Active: 1216-1272

Henry was a pious and unworldly man rather than a military campaigner. He was devoted to St Edward the Confessor and rebuilt Westminster Abbey where this former king was buried.

Henry inherited the throne as a minor and later encountered problems as he tried to assert his authority. His reign saw a failed expedition to Poitou and a failed crusade; a crisis in Gascony and a baronial revolt led by Henry's own brother-in-law, Simon de Montfort. Henry was renowned for his inconstancy, perhaps from a tendency to rely overly on his advisors.
