Gilbert de Clare, seventh earl of Gloucester and sixth earl of Hereford

Born: 2 September 1243   Died: 7 December 1295   

The eldest son of Richard de Clare, earl of Hertford and earl of Gloucester (1222-1262), and his second wife, Maud (d. 1288/9), daughter of John de Lacy, earl of Lincoln (d. 1240), Gilbert played a leading role in English politics for three decades and was one of the most influential men in the kingdom.

Gilbert switched allegiance several times in his career; he initially supported the baronial cause in the civil war spearheaded by Simon de Montfort, but was later instrumental in defeating the rebels at Evesham (1265) and in facilitating Edward I's accession to the throne. Later, he greatly helped Edward's cause in the Welsh campaigns.
