Gilbert fitz Richard; Gilbert de Clare; Gilbert of Tonbridge; Gilbert fitz Richard , Earl of Clare

Died: 1117

The son of Richard de Clare (d. c. 1090), the first post-conquest lord of Clare, Gilbert inherited his father's English lands, c. 1086.

Gilbert supported Robert Curthose's claim to the throne against William Rufus and his castle of Tonbridge was duly besieged by the king. Gilbert later supported Robert de Mowbray's conspiracy against William II but seems to have been reconciled with the king thereafter.
Gilbert was one of the wealthiest and most powerful men in early twelfth-century England.
