Richard II , king of England and lord of Ireland, and duke of Aquitaine

Richard alienated his people through his attempts to tighten his bureaucratic hold. He was forced to abdicate and died (perhaps starved to death) in prison.

Richard was the son of Edward, the Black Prince, and succeeded his grandfather, Edward III, as king when he was only a boy - just ten years old. His reign saw great discontent for the rising cost of war with France meant higher taxation. This provoked the popular uprising - the Peasants' Revolt - in 1381. Richard also faced opposition from the lords appellants, whom he overthrew, but was later forced to abdicate. Henry Bolingbroke succeeded him as Henry IV.
