Henry was a pious and unworldly man rather than a military campaigner. He was devoted to St Edward the Confessor and rebuilt Westminster Abbey where this former king was buried.

Henry inherited the throne as a minor and later encountered problems as he tried to assert his authority. His reign saw a failed expedition to Poitou and a failed crusade; a crisis in Gascony and a baronial revolt led by Henry's own brother-in-law, Simon de Montfort. Henry was renowned for his inconstancy, perhaps from a tendency to rely overly on his advisors.
