Robert , first earl of Gloucester, lord of Glamorgan

An illegitimate son of Henry I, Robert was one of the most powerful men of his time. He died of a fever in 1147.

As earl of Gloucester Robert built a castle at Neath and established the lordship there. During the anarchic years of Stephen's reign Robert at first supported Stephen but then switched his allegiance to the Empress Matilda. He commanded her forces during the siege of Winchester. Robert was succeeded by his son, William.
