Created first earl of Hereford by King John in 1200, he later opposed the king and joined the rebel barons. Henry died on pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1220.

A nephew of William the Lion of Scotland and a great grandson of David I, Henry was created first earl of Hereford by King John in 1200. Following a dispute with John he joined the rebel barons who opposed the king and Henry was one of the twenty-five appointed to make sure that Magna Carta was observed. Following John's death in 1216 Henry supported Louis of France but later made peace with the new government. He died on pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1220.
