Payne de Chaworth , lord of Kidwelly

Died: c. 1278/9   

Son of Patrick de Chaworth and Hawise de Londres, he married Isabella de Beauchamp and was responsible for rebuilding the stone castle at Kidwelly.

Payne accompanied Prince Edward (later Edward I) on Crusade in 1270-2, and upon his return seemingly built the inner ward of Kidwelly Castle. In c. 1276 Payne was made a captain of West Wales by Edward I. His role as capitaneus meant he was responsible for leading a regional army; in 1277, in the first Welsh War, Payne led Edward's troops in to Welsh Deheubarth.
Payne died two years later.
